Console popularity in South East Asia (Infographic)

Competition among consoles or what we usually know as Console War is an inevitable event in video game industry. This console war has been going since the early 90’s when Nintendo and SEGA are still competing with each other for console supremacy and until now that Microsoft, Sony and even Nintendo are battling it out to be the best console provider in the market and to capture the hearts of the gamers from all over the world.

This console war has been the center of all topics and debates from all fanboys and this competition is really a phenomenon to say the least as author Blake J. Harris even wrote a book about the console war of Nintendo and SEGA, and how it defined the gaming today. The book became so popular that it was released in paperback form and in digital which you can read using your iPad, Android devices, or in Kindle E-Reader.

Generally, the console war was based on the specifications of a console, its first party game titles and the number of sales for both consoles and games. Countries like USA, Japan, and other parts of Europe usually provide the number of sales for each consoles but sadly, no reports are being released in South East Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines, however, an e-commerce site located in South East Asia made a study on how popular the Playstation consoles, Nintendo consoles and Xbox consoles in the said region.

Console Infographic

As you can see in the infographic above, Playstation leads the way in console popularity in South East Asia with 44% are in favor for the console made by Sony. Surprisingly, Nintendo comes in second with 30% and Xbox is close behind, landing in third place at 26%.

Sony Playstation

Sony Playstation making it as the most popular gaming console in South East Asia is not surprising because it is not just PS4 being the number selling current gem console right now, Playstation has its own branches in South East Asian countries like Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and even in Hong Kong. Sony is supporting these said countries making the console and its services and games accessible to the gamers in these countries.

With that being said, PS4 is the most popular among all Sony gaming products closing in at 45%. Ps2 is still making its name in the region landing at 2nd place among the Sony consoles and handhelds, and to wrap things out, PS3 is in third while handheld devices such as Sony PSP and Sony PS Vita claiming the last spot.

As for the countries, Playstation is popular in Vietnam with 66% of Vietnamese gamers owned a Playstation product. Coming in close second is Indonesia with 65%, followed by Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines and Malaysia.

Nintendo

It is now safe to say that Nintendo still has its appeal with the Asian market as Nintendo products are not just popular in Japan, but also in South East Asian countries. Surprisingly, the said “inferior current gen console” – Nintendo Wii U is very popular in South East Asia with 61% of gamers in the region know the system. Nintendo Wii closing in at 39%. What noticeable in this infograph is the missing Nintendo 3DS numbers because the handheld is very much popular all over the world.

For countries, gamers from Hong Kong really loves their Nintendo stuff as 41% of gamers from Hong Kong are using Nintendo products. Coming in second is Singapore, and followed by Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Microsoft Xbox

When you say console war these days, gamers will tend to think that it is always Playstation vs. Xbox, however, Xbox consoles are not the popular in South East Asia region as it came it last when it comes to console popularity. This number was due mostly with Microsoft lacking of support, not just in South East Asia region, but also in whole Asia.

For countries, Malaysia ranks number 1 when it comes to Xbox popularity, followed by Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam and Hong Kong.
