Ah, the wonders of video gaming, it lets us escape into another world, be another person, live an entirely different life. Not long ago, video games were often scrutinized as being a time-wasting hobby as well as a bad influence to both children and adults (apparently video gaming can cause bouts of rage and violence in a person, but that’s a story for another day). Today, however, it’s a hobby or past time that has drawn a lot of attention; in fact, it’s so huge that there are many international competitions that let the best of the best e-sports gamers compete for a large sum of money!

Here we are going to talk about some of the greatest video games ever made (up until this point). These are award-winning games that have exceeded the expectations of many people because of their incredible stories, graphics, gameplay and mechanics, and just how it all comes together. Here are games that can convert your Average Joe into a casual gamer – and in the long run, maybe turn them into an e-sport athlete.

In no particular order, let’s begin:

1) The BioShock series

There are many ways to describe the trinity of the BioShock series: BioShock 1, Bioshock 2, and BioShock Infinite – and all of its great downloadable content (DLC) – but the word that first comes to mind is gripping. The BioShock series is one of the rare view video game series with a plotline that constantly keeps you on the edge of your seat like never before. The first two games take place in the underwater city of Rapture that’s built for only the elite, and the third game takes place in Columbia, a flying city that is on a brink of civil war. The series set the standard for video games for its astonishing plotline that made you think and its quick-paced action gameplay, you can’t ever put this down.

2) Counter-Strike

Counter Strike is one of the oldest competitive first-person shooter video games out there, and its still going strong with its newest incarnation in the form of Counter Strike: Global Offensive. The game was first developed in 1999 as a mod of Half-Life (another great game) but has evolved into one of the top e-sports games today. Taking the form of an extremely fast-paced first-person shooter, Counter Strike divides players into two teams: “Terrorists” and “Counter-Terrorist”; both teams then compete with each other for a certain objective, such as the planting and defusing of a C4 bomb.

3) StarCraft & StarCraft II

Looking for a great sci-fi strategy game with aliens, bugs, and space marines blazing their machine guns? StarCraft has long been go-to for such strategy games. The first StarCraft game was released by Blizzard in 1998; the game takes place in the future of the 25th Century where three races fight each other for control of a part of the Milky Way galaxy: the Terran humans, the Zerg bug-like aliens; and the Protoss, a humanoid alien species with advanced technologies. Its sequel, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty was released in 2010, followed by other StarCraft II games. The game series is noted as being one of the most important video games ever released; it also set the bar pretty high for a strategy game during its time.

4) The Sims franchise

The Sims franchise is a strategic life-simulation video game franchise, allowing players to control the daily activities and life of virtual people known as the Sims in a suburban household. The games were mainly “sandbox”-styled, as in there were no objectives or true ending to the game, allowing players to play on for long periods. The first game was released in 2000, with its development lead by game designer Will Wright; the game also famously held the title of the best-selling game in history for many years before being outsold by many newer games today. The newest Sims game is the Sims 4, which has brought many improvements and innovations since the first game.

5) The Last of Us

For those who love really great stories will truly appreciate The Last of Us; a PlayStation exclusive video game, The Last of Us tells the story of a man, Joel, that is given a task to escort a young girl, Ellie, through the post-apocalyptic city in the United States. The game takes place in a world where a type of fungus has infected the world, creating zombie-like creatures, inevitably causing the world’s downfall. With one of the best voice acting one has ever heard of a game and a thought-provoking story, The Last of Us is one game you should not miss.

6) Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

The GTA series of games made sandbox games the thing, and they made the best free-roam sandbox games out there. Starting from a top-down 2D game, GTA has now become an expansive 3D free-roam game with incredible detail and realistic environments. However, one of the best GTA games is the older GTA: San Andreas. Being a reasonably old game that was released for the PlayStation 2, GTA: San Andreas still holds the title for one of the most in-depth games out there; it seriously pushed the limits of the PlayStation 2. Players control CJ, a man returning to his home where it has been corrupted by corrupted cops and drugs.

7) Final Fantasy series

Cliché hero saves heroine with an ever-present magical crystal is the bread and butter than makes up a Final Fantasy game, and that is pretty much how it always has been since the first game (though it is not always a crystal). Created by the great Hironobu Sakaguchi and developed and owned by Square Enix, the Final Fantasy franchise mostly takes place in a science-fiction and fantasy setting. The many games (a total of 15 main games thus far, excluding spin-offs) and movies of Final Fantasy often have a complex and intense story line, plus hours and hours of gameplay. The entire series made the turn-based combat system incredibly popular, although later games have totally done away with it. Notable releases are Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy VI.

8) Pokemon Red & Pokemon Blue

Yes, everyone is mad about Pokemon Go on their smartphones and mobile devices today, but the origin of the craze did not quite start with the mobile application. The original Pokemon games of Red and Blue were first made available on the GameBoy on February 27 in 1996, and the craze then began. Although there are many better releases of the game, later on, nothing could quite seemingly replace the classics that sat in people’s hearts. The original  Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue games allowed the player to control a little character on a quest to collect all of the Pokemon creatures and battle with them in turn-based battle systems. It was an incredibly simple game, yet with a little bit more depth to make it attractive.

9) Tetris

In a world where very video game is seemingly complicated with in-depth storylines, complex game mechanics, and ultra-realistic graphics, Tetris may seem a little out of place. But this classic Russian-designed and Japanese-distributed game has been played by almost everyone in the world in some form or another. Its one of the launch titles for the NES and GameBoy as well, propelling the handheld console to success. It’s a simple yet addictive game which requires the player to line up tiles at the bottom of the screen to gain points

10) Super Mario Bros.

I’m gonna make a big claim, but I am pretty sure that everyone who is playing games right now have started out with playing the Super Mario Brothers on some older Nintendo console, be it the GameBoy or the Nintendo Entertainment System. This classic 2D platformer about a plumber, Mario, trying to save a princess while taking out mushrooms and bonking bricks with his head will never get old. Mario remains one of the oldest gaming icons in history, and without him – well, I don’t want to imagine what the gaming world would be like without Mario.

Before we end this fun list of 10 games, I would like to just mention that the list of games is entirely according to my opinion, and your own list of 10 games might be a little bit different. Other than that, do try out these great games if you haven’t!
